Back in 2010, the first year I started teaching in PJ Global School. I was the Primary 1 homeroom teacher and I had been a homeroom teacher for 5 years. Then, in 2016, I was a teacher in Junior High. And now, it’s been almost 5 years since I'm teaching in Senior High. We started as a class with no more than 12 students. Now, there are more than 70 students in PJ Global School Senior High.
How about the facilities in our school? Well, our school is not that big, compared to most of the well-known high schools in Malang. We only have one classroom for each class and more less, there are 24 to 25 students in each class. Yes, we have a basketball court but it is still under construction. Yes, we do have a science center and library, but those places are shared with Junior Highschoolers and Primary students. But one thing you should know is that we are striving our best to bring the best learning experience and environment every single day.
I still remember, it is still vivid in my mind, the first competition that we have ever joined was a Debate Competition in Brawijaya University, in 2017. We were the quarterfinalist (Top 8). It was not that bad as a newcomer, right. Then one of my students won second place in English Speech in Machung University. It was an astonishing achievement since she had beaten several university students from famous universities. Then, a month or two later, she became the First Winner of English Speech held by State University of Surabaya. As I am writing this article, she is in the middle of pursuing her dream to be a diplomat and studying in the International Relations Study Program in Pajajaran University. She was accepted in that prestigious campus because of her portofolio of winning several competitions.
Indeed, one of our school missions is to create and support students so they can compete globally. That is why, we prepare the students as they enter our school, we will train them to compete in various olympiads and competitions. It’s been two years in a row, since 2022, our students achieved the Silver Medal of Informatics in the National Olympiad held by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Indonesia. Just a month ago, we placed the Bronze Medal of Physics in the same competition. In June 2023, our student just came back after completing a one year highschool in Indiana, USA, since she got a full scholarship from the Department of State of USA as an exchange student. In addition, as I am constructing this article, we are preparing our 8 students to face an interview stage for getting a scholarship to study in the USA and Japan.
Perhaps, after you read the above part, you would feel overwhelmed. How come such a small school can accomplish such amazing achievements? (Not to mention that we do have placed many graduates in favorite universities, such as University of Indonesia, Pajajaran University, Gajah Mada University, Brawijaya University, State University of Malang, and Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology). It’s solely because of our passion to prepare and support all students so they can bring out the very best of themselves. Not even once, a day in our school has left without school programs, competitions, and Joint Entrance Selection of State Universities class.
And now, our challenges are getting stronger. The parents’ demand for their sons and daughters to have a chance to study abroad after graduate is getting high. Students’ wish to join any competition is increasing. By keep updating our interactive classroom learning, preparing the meaningful yet fun school programs, and escalating our teacher’s in accuring the creative and present-day skills, are some of our ways and efforts to put our school on the right track to be the notable high school in Malang.
We do realize that we still need a very long way to achieve it. Therefore, I strongly believe, if we put in such a great endeavor and we have faith in God, there is always a possibility.
